Heading towards our 5th Anniversary: Reflections from the heart of our kitchen

Hello, The Good Kitchen family!

A very special date is approaching, one that fills our hearts with immense joy: on July 31st, we will officially celebrate 5 years since we first opened the doors of this community space. Reaching this milestone puts us in a deeply reflective mood. Looking back, we see a path paved with love, resilience, countless connections, and, above all, shared meals that turned into beautiful stories.

To celebrate this milestone anniversary, we are opening a very special space on our blog. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing a series of posts featuring personal reflections by Danny McCubbin, our founder and current kitchen volunteer, who has been on the frontline of every smile, every challenge, and every daily miracle here in Mussomeli.

To kick off this series, Danny shares a deeply intimate piece dedicated to a fundamental pillar of our community: our dear elderly friends. We leave you with his words:

Our Elderly Friends

In the quiet moments of my life, I often find myself thinking about the friends I have made here at The Good Kitchen. Some of them are no longer with us, and to each of you I simply want to say thank you for coming into my life, and for allowing me to walk this path alongside you, even if only for a little while. We have so much to learn from elderly people. Their compassion, their resilience, and their wisdom continue to inspire me every single day. I am constantly humbled by the way The Good Kitchen has become a safe and welcoming space where young and elderly can come together over food. Whether I have cooked a meal for someone, or simply welcomed them to our table on a Sunday for lunch, I am always so moved by their stories, their willingness to open their hearts.

When I first launched The Good Kitchen all those years ago, I befriended a local resident named Calogero. He was one of the very first people in the town I ever cooked for. Back then, it was just the two of us, and even in those early days I knew in my heart how important those moments were. Most days, it was just Calogero and me. My new friend would sit quietly, content in the silence, listening to the gentle rhythm of me preparing his lunch. Pasta, always pasta. The simplicity of cooking negated the need for many words. The smile on his face as he ate lunch made everything worthwhile. Even now, as I write this, I can see that smile so clearly. It has been a while since I last saw Calogero, but time does not seem to matter. You are always in my thoughts, my friend. I also find myself thinking of our elderly friends who still arrive at the kitchen with donations from their campagnas, their small farms. At times when our supplies have been low, their generosity has sustained us in a very practical way, ensuring that our community has fresh food. 

For many of our elderly friends, what they need most is not complicated. Sometimes it is simply a chair, a glass of water, a place to rest. A smile and a handshake and a hug, when it is needed. One of the most profound experiences of my life is being given the opportunity to cook for members of our community in the later stages of their lives. Love and compassion through food, reminding me that one day I too will need to rely on the help from friends. And thank you to each and every one of you in Mussomeli who has shaped this journey and made it so extraordinary. You continue to teach me, to humble me, and to inspire me. You all make me want to be a better person.
